What does Cozumel mean?

In Spanish, the word Cozumel mean “The Island of Swallows”. The original name is given by the Mayans an it was “Cuzamil” which mean the same as Cozumel.

Many stories had been said about Cozumel. The most known is that the Mayans considered this Island as the place where they would asure to have children if the pregnant woman would come to the Island to pray to the Goddess IxChel to have a healthy children.

Besides by plane, there are also two other ways how you can visit the Island. One is by Ferry departing from Puerto Morelos which is a longest and a slower ride than using the Ferry in Calica or Punta Venado Ferry, right next to Xcaret. The other way is by Passengers Ferries departing from Playa del Carmen.

The cost of the Ferry and the cost of the rental of the car will be just the same or less than the cost of all of the transportation you have to pay, from your hotel, at the Ferry and while moving on the Island.

Suggested departure from the Calica Ferry (Punta Venado) is at 6am and people can pay in advance to avoid long waiting lines.

What should I know to visit the Cozumel?

If you visit the Island for one day, make sure you have an additional clothing, swim suit, sunblock and sunglasses. 

People staying in Cozumel should have the option to choose from an All Inclusive plan at their hotels or just lodging. There are so many activities that may not be convenient to waist the food included in the All inclusive plan.

Tourists are very safe in Cozumel and like any other big city all over the world, keep yourself within an iluminated areas and very close to the activity.

Local people are very friendly and most of local business accept dollars but will give change in pesos.

As Cozumel is a very important touristic destination, there are available big stores with international brands and shooting malls as well including all renowned worldwide brands. 

Where can I exchange money in Cozumel

Best way to exchange money is either at the Airport upon your arrival to our country or at your Hotel. If you can get this options, go to a Bank or Money Exchange Tenders. Distrust ATM Machines on the street and take chances only at a big stores or establishments. There are several Money Exchange Tenders as well as ATM machines down town, however, as said before, US Cash is accepted almost everywhere. Just keep in mind to have small bills or change will be given in pesos at a very low rate of exchange. US Coins are not accepted anywhere.
