What does Cozumel mean?
In Spanish, the word Cozumel mean “The Island of Swallows”. The original name is given by the Mayans an it was “Cuzamil” which mean the same as Cozumel.
Many stories had been said about Cozumel. The most known is that the Mayans considered this Island as the place where they would asure to have children if the pregnant woman would come to the Island to pray to the Goddess IxChel to have a healthy children.
Besides by plane, there are also two other ways how you can visit the Island. One is by Ferry departing from Puerto Morelos which is a longest and a slower ride than using the Ferry in Calica or Punta Venado Ferry, right next to Xcaret. The other way is by Passengers Ferries departing from Playa del Carmen.

There are several Money Exchange Tenders as well as ATM machines down town, however, as said before, US Cash is accepted almost everywhere. Just keep in mind to have small bills or change will be given in pesos at a very low rate of exchange. US Coins are not accepted anywhere.
